Ward beaten on bow

BRIDGE Foot Police Amateur Boxing Club's Lee Ward suffered defeat against a more experienced Irish opponent on his England debut.

Ward was selected to represent England in the final of the Four Nations Junior Championships in Liverpool after becoming the Junior Amateur Boxing Association under 46kg champion in May.

Ward faced the talented John-Joe Nevin, who had several national and international titles to his name, but acquitted himself well and led on points after the first round.

But Nevin's experience eventually came to the fore and the Irish boxer secured a 19-7 points victory, leaving Ward, who is only in his third season as a boxer, with the silver medal.
