More green waste sent to centre

HALTON households have helped to send more green waste to be recycled at the composting site at Haddocks Wood.

More than 11,500 tonnes of garden waste has been sent to the composting site that turns rubbish into compost that can be used in people's gardens.

And now Halton Borough Council is hoping for even more waste to be sent for composting after distributing a further 8,000 green bins across the borough that will hopefully bring up the level of rubbish that can be recycled even further.

Garden and paper waste account for a large amount of the waste produced in Halton and these bio-degradable products produce methane gas, which contribute to the effects of global warming, when sent to landfill sites.

The council is currently well above the national average for council recycling rates and last year it achieved a 23 per cent level of recycling, which it hopes to get up to 25 per cent by the end of this year.

Its performance also puts it ahead of other local authorities in Warrington, Liverpool and St Helens.
