Detecting knife crime

INNOVATIVE mobile metal detectors will be used to combat knife crime in pubs, nightclubs and at football matches.

It follows the crackdown on weapons in June when more than 2,000 knives and bladed weapons were handed in.

Sgt Graham Hale of Cheshire Police, said: "Until we took delivery of this equipment, it would have been very labour intensive to effectively search everyone entering a club.

"This equipment makes it easier to check people over.

"If the detectors register something metal concealed on a person, we can intervene and check properly."

Three archway detectors, each costing £3,650, will be set up at the entrance to venues where people are suspected of carrying knives.

A further 130 hand held detectors, costing £92 each, will also be used.

Similar machines already being used in railway stations by British Transport Police have proved very successful.

The detectors won't be confined to licensed premises but will also be used to check drivers and their vehicles for hidden weapons.

Asst Ch Con David Baines, said: "Sadly, too many people think it's cool to carry a weapon.

"Our aim is to give a clear message - if you carry a weapon, you will be caught and prosecuted."

The equipment has been bought with a Home Office grant of £15,600 and £10, 000 from Cheshire Police.
