PRIDE OF WIDNES

The victorious Wade Deacon side

VICTORIOUS Wade Deacon will perform a lap of honour at Widnes' last home league game of the season after winning the Powergen Champion Schools Final at Twickenham.

The Year Seven boys were presented with their winners medals by rugby legend Martin Offiah after overpowering Abraham Guest High School in the Challenge Cup 'curtain raiser'.

Second row Lewis Whitty scored two tries in a man of the match performance which saw the Widnes school defeat their Wigan and Leigh-based opponents 20-4.

Teammate James Catan opened the scoring, breaking from inside his own half to score before Whitty grabbed his first, pouncing on a towering kick by hooker Alex Clare.

Abraham Guest narrowed Wade Deacon's lead through centre Michael Scrivens but loose forward Kieron Ashley collected another high kick to score just before the break.

Whitty bagged his second with the try of the match - a well rehearsed set move involving four dummy runners - before Clare capped off a fine performance, forcing his way over from acting half back.

The result capped off an amazing weekend for Wade Deacon with head coach Carlton Bramwell paying tribute to the rugby played by both teams in front of a packed stadium.

"The standard of both teams, for 12-year-olds, was exceptional," Bramwell said.

"The lack of mistakes under pressure was amazing and that's credit to all the kids.

"The whole weekend was just a fabulous experience for them all. They did it as a team, having worked hard all year. The whole school will be very proud of them."

It is not the first time the school has tasted success on Challenge Cup final day.

Two years ago a year seven team also won the curtain raiser but this year's crop have done so having won the Nort West cup as well.

Having met Offiah, visited England's Twickenham dressing room, all the lads need for inspiration before the new campaign trail in a few week's time is to step out on to the Halton Stadium pitch on September 10.
