A UNIQUE 'one-stop shop' for drug addicts and alcoholics in Halton is set to be officially opened by Granada Tonight presenter Lucy Meacock next week.

A �600,000 renovation will see Ashley House become the first treatment and rehabilitation centre of its kind in the north west in the battle against substance abuse.

"This will be an excellent facility for people experiencing difficulties with drug and alcohol problems," said Cllr Marie Wright, Halton Council's board member for community.

"Staff will be able to provide help and support for Halton residents by delivering services locally."

The three-storey centre will see Government and voluntary agencies covering health, social care and the criminal justice system housed under one roof, which will mean easy access for users.

Advice and information will also be given on finding work, returning to education and securing accommodation.

"We know that users of drug and alcohol services can experience great difficulties in accessing the other kinds of services that play a vital part in helping them re-build their lives," said Steve Eastwood, Halton Council's drug action team co-ordinator.

"By adopting this approach, our aim is that more people will come forward for treatment and have the right support structures to help bring some order to their lives.

"This initiative will make communities safer and healthier," he added.

"The users of Ashley House live in Halton - they will not be strangers or visitors - therefore if we help them, everyone will benefit."

Miss Meacock, anchorwoman on the ITV news programme, will perform the official opening ceremony on September 5.
