Jacques

own goal sickener on debut

RUNCORN Town suffered a 2-1 home loss to undefeated Mallaby on Saturday.

Town were on top for the majority of the game but lost it in heartbreaking fashion in injury time when debut player Garry Jacques put the ball into his own net.

Mallaby had taken the lead in the 15th minute after slicing through Town's defence. The ball was thread through to Mike New, whose angled shot from inside the box went under Andy Murphy.

Town came into the game more with Danny Cummins going closest with a volley.

However, despite playing themselves into good positions on numerous occasions, it was ultimately the final ball that let them down.

Despite that, the hosts were level in the 47th minute after Darren Moore was brought down in the box with Paul Hart converting the penalty for his ninth goal in six games.

Town had chances to win, with the Mallaby goalkeeper pulling off a spectacular double save from Hart's shot and Kev Ward's follow up, but suffered heartache in injury time when Mallaby broke down the left and crossed with Jacques scoring past Murphy.

Meanwhile, Town's reserves lie fifth in Division Three after a 2-2 draw at Shaftesbury.

Lewis Watson gave Town a great start after two minutes with a shot that found the top corner from 20 yards.

It got even better for Town after 20 minutes when David Threlfall's superb volley from Paul Angell's flick-on found the net.

Shaftesbury's Lee Hodgin scored twice either side of half time with the home side looking good for the win in the wind but to their credit Town came back into the game, dominating the last 10 minutes and could have won it.

Andy Doyle curled the ball just wide with Aaron Conlan hitting the outside of the post.
